dhw: The analogy only seems wrong to you because (a) you think you know that cells can't think, and (b) you think you know that we have free will. Some people believe that cells can think, and some people believe we do not have free will because we are trapped by the chain of limitless causes and effects. It is because there are different opinions that the analogy is correct: nobody can tell the difference from the outside between automatic and autonomous behaviour. And neither the believers nor the sceptics can “prove their case”.-Granted. It all becomes a matter of 'belief' on both sides .
