The Nature of this Conflict (Humans)

by xeno6696 @, Omaha NE, Sunday, February 07, 2010, 19:10 @ David Turell

This is very parallel to my own opposition to the most recent war in Iraq. I don't think its possible for a country to keep its freedom when they had never fought for it in the first place--just as much as you couldn't expect Haiti to develop into an economic powerhouse overnight, neither could you expect a people who had no George Washingtons or Sam Adams to be able to cherish, maintain, and respect the freedom they have when it was not they themselves who sacrificed for it.

Going back to Haiti, I'm also not going to argue that they should "pick themselves up by their bootstraps," but I also don't think that international welfare is a solution. They need to encourage foreign investment--get factories set up there and some training and I bet they could compete cost-wise Vietnam for textiles, etc. But its not going to be a rapid transformation.
