Certain combinations of molecules and environment are more conducive to replication than others. Variation during the replication process due to cause and effect has lead to increasing complexity of these molecules that replicate and ultimately has lead to what we describe as life.

A ménage of cooperating biochemical molecules do create life, but life is the whole organism. Every molecule in life is constantly replicating, as cells are born and die. The whole organism struggles to survive. It is the variety of organisms that are presented to their total environment that natural selection acts upon. It can only act upon what is previously presented.
