This sounds like a reversion to the nineteenth century idea of the aether, which physicists and mathematicians like Kelvin, Tait and Clifford tried to explain in terms of vortices, or smoke rings, or knots and suchlike. It also sounds a bit like string theory, which is similar to these old theories in a way.
