The State of the State in General AI (reply)

Romansh is simply pointing out that the switching you're discussing doesn't have to be modeled in hardware. It can be done in software, and in my mind, without drastically increasing complexity.-I still hold that the current, von neumann architecture we use is completely ill suited for that task.

No, no. I've followed you. What you are missing is the innate plasticity of brain cells, altering themselves and taking over diffferent functions. In a recent paper fibers to the optic centers were cut and shifted to the auditory center and 'seeing' still occurred. The blind develop extremely heigthened alternate senses, but you knew that.
>
> Also it does not have to be a physical plasticity - it could be a digital plasticity instead.-the cells adopt a new function, and they do it biochemically. where does digital come in?

> > Naughty naughty... you haven't kept up with my AI posts. All experts agree that the key to "true" AI is first in having a computer that fundamentally recreates the architecture of the brain. (If you want, I can go into detail again.)
> >
> > That article is flawed however. We will never learn truth about consciousness, without trying to create it ourselves. Just as a true chef, can only learn cooking by mixing and tasting her ingredients...
>
> No, no. I've followed you. The blind develop extremely heigthened alternate senses, but you knew that.-True, but we need to be able to build a reliable memristor type machine first before we can do something fancy like a machine that rewires itself over time. -Baby steps.
